Soon the Big Holidays are Beginning!

The seventh-grade pupils have written their final exams and are now waiting for the results. The papers are anonymously marked with a number and are marked and cross-marked by selected teachers throughout the country. This prevents any schools or children from receiving preferential treatment—a procedure that fully reflects the immense importance of this first state examination.

For the other classes the school year will end in a few days. The boarding school will gradually be empty, and the young people living there will return to their foster families for two months.

During the holidays, final work will be carried out to complete the grounds of the new training workshop. Furthermore, some renovations are also planned for the school and boarding school buildings, which cannot be done while classes are ongoing.

Everyone is eagerly anticipating the start of the new school year in February. The school community is looking forward to welcoming the new three-year-olds in the Baby Class and especially the first apprentices for the new training workshop.

Structural Work Has Been Completed

A bit of paint inside and out, plus a few other jobs are still missing

The Structural Work Has Been Completed

Over the past few months, many hardworking hands have been busy meeting the schedule for the basic construction for the apprentice workshop for tailoring and home economics. And that’s not it! Thanks to the excellent planning, the costs could be kept within the budget. Some final touches are still pending, but most importantly, the two workshops need to be set up with the necessary furnishings and technical equipment. This will happen simultaneously over the next few weeks to be ready for the kickoff in January!

Start of construction of the tailoring/home economics apprenticeship workshop

Some of you may have read about it in the newspaper. UgandaKids received funding approval from the Bavarian State Chancellery a few days ago. With the promised €49,999 in funding and the accumulated reserves, the financing of this second branch of the apprenticeship workshops has been secured, and the workers have been able to get project running. The construction crew, led by Israel Kawuka, has proven themselves and shown their commitment over the years, are taking on this new task.  The schedule calls for the shell construction to be completed by summer. For the interior work, as well as the purchase and transport of the necessary tools and materials a few more weeks of work can be calculated.

Towards the end of this year, the first apprentices will also be able to “grow up with prospects!”

Our thanks goes to the One World Network Bavaria and the Bavarian State Chancellery for making this tremendous support possible.

New Schoolyear Number 19

Since Monday 3rd of February, a lot is going on for more than 750 people who are attending UgandaKids’ school, studying in the scholarship program and who are working for the cause of “Growing Up with perspectives.”

UgandaKids is entering its nineteenth year.

Preschool and elementary school are once again completely full this year with 650 children and youth. Some difficult decisions had to be made regarding the scholarship program. Due to high costs, no new students could start to study at university this year. However, students already in semester two or higher will continue to receive support up to a bachelor’s degree.

UgandaKids is financially supporting over 40 young people at three different secondary schools in and around Adjumani up to GCSE level (General Certificate of Secondary Education) or even to A-Level (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level). The scholarship program has truly developed into an amazing success story.

This also makes the 60 adults who work for UgandaKids very happy.

School Year 2024 Coming to an End

At the beginning of November, the young people from seventh grade wrote their first national final exam. The papers are now being corrected and graded by examiners in other parts of the country. The teachers are just as excited as the “candidates” about the results, which will be published at the end of January. The bar is set high, as Robert Vukeni graduated with the top grade in last year’s class. A so-called Aggregate 4 cannot be beaten. (To explain: even an Agg. 12 would still be a “one minus”). Robert is now continuing his education at a secondary school in Kampala with the help of a government scholarship.  For the younger children at primary school, not only the calendar year but also the school year is coming to an end next week. The former secondary school students, who are supported by UgandaKids through our scholarship program, will go on their long holidays until February. Many are in boarding schools and return to their relatives or foster parents after months.
